ADMINISTRATION OF SCHOLARSHIP FUND:
The STLA Scholarship Committee will be established and consist of not less than three members and not more than five members. A minimum of two Board members will be on the Committee along with a regular member of the association. The Committee will be appointed annually before September 1 by the President and STLA Board of Directors.
All proceeds from STLA-sponsored silent auctions, raffles, and other designate fund raisers throughout the year will benefit the STLA Youth Scholarship Program along with the scholarship partnership funds supplied annually by Central Life Sciences Corporation. Additional funding may come from memorial and/or honorary contributions to the fund by association members or others, as well as funding from the STLA General Fund, as might be required or directed, with majority approval of the STLA Board.
The STLA Treasurer will keep a separate recording of the monies dedicated to the STLA Youth Scholarship Fund. The STLA Youth Scholarship Fund monies will be kept in and disbursed from the General Fund unless the STLA Board of Directors directs the Treasurer otherwise.
ELIGIBILTY AND QUALIFICATION CRITERIA:
STLA Youth Scholarships will be available to any graduating high-school senior or GED recipient involved with our association and worthy of a scholarship based on the qualifications outlined. There will be two types of Youth Scholarships for which graduates may apply, if they meet the criteria set forth in Sections A or B (below).
An applicant may apply for both Scholarship categories; however, qualified applicants will only be awarded one Scholarship. These Scholarships may be used at any accredited University, College, or Trade/Technical School.
The Scholarship Committee has the right to reject any Youth Scholarship application that is not properly completed or does not meet the criteria and/or is submitted with an improper essay or false information.
(A) The STLA Breeders of Tomorrow Scholarship:
Any young person that has been a Junior (Youth) member of STLA, or whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have been a member of STLA,in good standing for the current year and previous two years in which the Scholarship will be awarded will be eligible to apply for the South Texas Longhorn Association "Breeders of Tomorrow Scholarship" (i.e. if a scholarship is to be awarded in 2018, one would have to have been a member, in good standing, throughout 2016 & 2017).
The applicant must complete and return the application form and all associated documents during the period between February 1 and April 15 of the applicant's senior year of high school. (B) The STLA Kids & Horns Scholarship:

Participation in each show must be indicated in the appropriate area on the application form and actual show entry and participation for the event will be verified against STLA show records.
A scholarship applicant must complete and return the application form and all associated documents during the period between February 1 and April 15 of the applicant's senior year of high school. In addition to the application form, the applicant must complete an essay on the topic chosen by the Scholarship Committee for that year. The essay topic may be different from the STLA Breeders of Tomorrow Scholarship topic. This will be determined each year by the STLA Scholarship Committee and is shown on the application form.
VALUE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP(S):
The value of any one scholarship awarded in May 2018 will be One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1,500 USD).
The value of the Youth Scholarships may be adjusted to a lesser amount in coming years if the Scholarship Committee deems it necessary, but all scholarships will be of equal value. As education costs continue to rise and if the fund balance grows, the dollar amount of the Scholarships awarded may also be increased on an equal basis by a majority vote of the STLA Board of Directors.
COMPLETION OF COURSEWORK:
Each applicant for the STLA Youth Scholarships will provide a letter from their high-school counselor OR an official transcript of their high-school classes/credits in order to verify their candidacy for May graduation. For GED candidates, a copy of the completed transcript for necessary GED coursework or completion of testing results must be submitted with the application materials.
ANNOUNCEMENTS OF SCHOLARSHIP(S):
The announcements of the STLA Scholarship recipients are to be made by May 15 of the current year. The recipients of the Scholarships will be issued a letter advising the Applicant/Recipient of the Scholarship award with a copy of the letter e-mailed to the recipient's High School Counselor. Press Releases will also be issued by the Scholarship Committee to appropriate news publications including the recipient's hometown newspaper.
RELEASE OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS:
Each recipient will be required to send a letter of thank you to the STLA General Membership (in care of the current President) within 30 days of notification of the Scholarship Award. The recipient must also notify the Committee of the name and contact information of the school that they will be attending including necessary student account information for STLA to send funds to the recipient's school of choice.
The Scholarship monies will be sent directly to the recipient's school and applied to the recipient's account at the school. The funds are to be paid to the school during the current year. If the need to delay payment arises, the recipient must receive approval from the Scholarship Committee to delay payment in order not to forfeit the scholarship award, but in no instance, will a scholarship funding payment be delayed longer than three (3) years from the award notification date. If Scholarship monies have been issued to a school as directed by a Scholarship recipient and the recipient does not attend the school, it is expected that the Scholarship monies will be returned to the STLA Scholarship Fund.
